About This Place

Nestled in the heart of San Francisco’s diverse culinary scene, Red House Bakery and Cafe offers an authentic taste of Cantonese-style bakery and comfort food that immediately transports you to the bustling streets of Hong Kong. Located at 2818 San Bruno Ave, this charming neighborhood gem invites you to indulge in a harmonious blend of freshly baked goods and savory dishes crafted with care.

Upon entering, you'll notice the cozy, unpretentious atmosphere—a favored spot among locals, particularly busy construction workers seeking hearty, made-to-order meals during weekdays. Though the space is modest and often buzzing with activity, the welcoming vibe makes any wait worthwhile.

The extensive menu is a testament to the kitchen’s versatility. From comforting bowls of Beef Porridge to the irresistible Singapore Style Rice Noodles and the crave-worthy Seafood Pan Fried Noodles, each dish bursts with robust flavors and textures. The pancaked noodles are perfectly crispy, complemented by generous seafood toppings that sing with freshness. The Toisan Fried Rice and Chicken and Salted Fish Fried Rice deliver layered, savory notes that can warm the soul.

Not to be missed are the bakery's iconic buns. As one delighted customer described, the Pineapple Bun with Butter is “soft and teary,” striking a perfect balance between flaky sweetness and creamy richness—a true hallmark of Cantonese bakeries. The cocktail bun, pork bun, and a selection of egg tarts and coconut tarts further showcase the bakery’s skill with traditional treats. Although the tea cup cake may sometimes lean towards dry, it remains a convenient quick fix for those seeking a sweet bite.

Beyond baked goods, the cafe impresses with its range of side dishes and beverages like the silky and aromatic Hong Kong Style Milk Tea, cooling Cucumber Salad, and warming Red Curry. The charm here lies not only in the traditional recipes but also in the affordable prices and generous portions that make dining an effortlessly satisfying experience.

Solid food for a very reasonable price. Got the Singapore style rice noodles and seafood pan fried noodles. Each was about $12. The seafood one had lots of toppings on it, and the noodles were crispy. The Singapore noodles was also tasty. The bakery is quite good. Highly recommend the cocktail bun. It's quite soft and teary. Most of the other buns are

This is a small Cantonese style bakery and diner serving many savory options over rice and fried noodles and soup noodles. Don't miss the daily happy hour breakfast combos! The prices are low and the meals are made-to-order. This place is often packed with local construction workers on weekdays. And they do a brisk business of many phone orders, so expect to wait for your food to eat in or to take away. Parking is tough nearby and enforcement is very strict.

The best deal for buns. The pineapple bun and pork bun are great. The egg tart and coconut tarts are decent. The tea cup cake is a bit dry but will do in a pinch. This place is a great neighborhood chinese bakery

Breakfast service stops at 11am. We got the breakfast combo E $9.50, which is beef porridge and soy sauce chow mein with a milk tea. The toisan 台山 fried rice was excellent. It was a lot of food already but we wanted to get the pineapple buns with a slice of butter. This is great if you are eating in the dining room since the pineapple bun comes straight out of the warm bun case. They provide a knife for you to slide that square of butter inside the bun yourself. Cash only and mandatory 15% tip if you are dining here.

If I lived in the area, I’d visit and get a chasiu bao (roast pork bun) and HK milk tea everyday. So fresh and so good!! Classic Chinese bakeries like these need to stay alive. Have a little patience and appreciation for this place, and you won’t regret going here. They have a lot of variety for you to bring to your next gathering! Can’t wait to return
